Cats may disrupt your sleep for various reasons:

Habit

You might unknowingly teach your cat to wake you up at a certain time. This happens because of the response you give to their behavior. For example, if you get up to check the litter box, refill their food and water bowls, or even play briefly to distract them, you’re reinforcing the behavior. The cat learns that their action gets attention, forming a habit quickly.

Note: Another common reason is the lack of a structured daily routine. If you don’t have one, you can’t entirely blame the cat for their behavior.

Genetics and Instincts

Cats are natural predators. They become active at night to hunt and often wake early in the morning to keep their territory under watch.

Additionally, instinctual behaviors such as those triggered by sexual maturity can disrupt their usual patterns. Cats might become aggressive, disobedient, or meow loudly at night in search of a mate, even attempting to escape the house.

Hunger

If your cat doesn’t get enough food during the day or lacks essential nutrients, they may feel hungry at night. In this case, they may wake you up to ask for more food.

Dirty Litter Box

Cats are clean animals that can’t tolerate a dirty litter box. This can lead to accidents outside the box and behavior meant to express their dissatisfaction to the owner.

Boredom and Attention-Seeking

Another common reason for nighttime activity is pent-up energy. Cats often nap while their owners are at work, saving their energy for playtime when you’re home. If they don’t get enough attention and stimulation, they may seek it during the night.

Illness

If a cat is experiencing pain or discomfort, they may try to communicate it by waking you up. Veterinarians recommend consulting a clinic at the first sign of unusual behavior to rule out health issues or identify underlying conditions.

Fear

Cats are sensitive animals that can be easily stressed. Stress may result from moving to a new home, the arrival of another pet, or changes in the family. Early morning wake-ups could be their way of expressing anxiety.
